I have graduated with a B.A. And did a creative writing graduate certificate, however I've been in the work force for a couple of years and am having trouble breaking into the employable writing world with just a creative creative writing background. I currently have the time and resources to improve my knowledge and resume by doing a course or program.

After a lot of research I have decided to pursue copy writing but I am having trouble choosing which program I should take.If you have taken any of the following courses or work in marketing/copywriting and have an opinion, which of these courses is most likely to impress employers and land you a job (+also teaching you the necessary information) 1.)UofT Continuing Studies - Strategic Copywriting - 3 courses - $2,307. 2.) George Brown - Copywriting (COMM 9195) - 1 course - $348. 3.) Seneca - Creative Advertising Diploma - 2 years/ 4 semesters - $6578Also if there are any other copywriting courses or programs in the GTA that I have not listed, please feel free to share. This is just my opinion on the subject but.For copywriting school is a waste of money and time. You’re better off reading classic books that get suggested on this sub multiple times. Then after that put into practice what you learn by trying to get clients. It won’t be easy.It could take you a year (possibly even longer) before you land even 1 client. But it beats going to school and taking courses that will eventually send you down this rabbit hole anyways. Also network like crazy.

Go to live networking events where you’ll meet business people and tell them what you do.By that I mean don’t tell them you’re a copywriter. Most of them won’t care. Tell them instead that you can make them more money and more sales.Gee if you think about it that’s a golden copywriting rule. Don’t talk about your features talk about how you benefit your clients?Honestly there’s so many tips in previous posts here that will help you get started and be way better than school.Just don’t get caught up and procrastinate. You need to take action and start doing.

After you’ve got the basics and principles down start pitching.1 client per week. And watch it snowball. I agree with ValuableK. People don't care where you went to school and what you learned in said school. The truth is, most of the courses you'll take there won't teach how to write successful copy. I didn't study copywriting in school and make 6 figures.I'm not saying that to brag, I'm saying it because anyone can learn how to do it.

You just need the right tools. Maybe something like Autoresponder Madness 2.0 by Andre Chaperon is a good place to start. Then I'd study top writers like Clayton Makepeace, Gary Halbert, even Ben Settle. Imo, save your money and start taking courses from people that have been doing it (successfully) for years.

Not teaching it. Again, just my opinion. I graduated from the Advertising Copywriting program at Humber College and I highly recommend it. It's a two-semester and one compulsory work placement post graduate certificate and highly sought after by employers in the GTA. The faculty is great and the program provides you with all the necessary tools to build a solid portfolio and succeed as a professional copywriter. The school also helps you find a work placement with ease.

They have a portfolio show/meet and greet at the end of the term where prospective employers are invited to go through your book and then contact you for internships. Almost everyone ends up finding a placement and getting their foot in the door. The other reputed one I know is the Creative Advertising diploma at Seneca. However it's an undergrad program and 2 years.

Since you already have a B.A with an additional certificate and some other work experience, I think the Humber program would be a great fit as it's catered towards mature students and graduates from various fields looking to enter the copywriting world. Hey Whipple, Squeeze This is about $15 on Amazon, and I typically see 'used' copies listed for less.

It's a great book with a killer bibliography. The Copy Book by D&AD is harder to find and a little more expensive, but it's a great resource.Lynda.com offers courses in content marketing and copywriting. Those sessions are free if you have a library card, and you can list them on your LinkedIn profile, if you care about that kind of thing.Like someone above said, no one's going to care about courses you've taken or certifications you've collected. And contest wins don't really carry much weight, I've found. Clients care about your work.Be transparent, be consistent, be on-time.
